Frequently Asked Questions
About Kit & Kin
Why did you choose the name Kit & Kin
Kit & Kin is a play on the phrase Kith and Kin.
Kith comes from a word of Germanic origin meaning ‘known’. Kin is also of Germanic origin, from an Indo-European root meaning ‘give birth to’. Your kith are your friends or acquaintances, while your kin are all the people you are related to.
We want to help protect our friends and family with a range of safe, affordable and eco friendly products, hence the name Kit & Kin. Real products for real families!
Disposable diapers & wipes
Why should I choose Kit & Kin diapers?
Approved by dermatologists, Kit & Kin is the hypoallergenic diaper with premium, plant-derived performance. Our diapers contain no harsh chemicals and use gentle, super soft materials to help safeguard your baby from sensitive skin problems like diaper rash. With a flash dry layer for instant dryness and patented channel technology to evenly distribute liquid around the diaper, baby’s bottom is better protected from leaks.
We use sustainable, plant-derived materials to help end our dependency on non-renewable resources and protect the future of your baby’s world. Our super absorbent core contains bio-based gels (based on mass balance) and totally chlorine-free, FSC® certified wood pulp from sustainably managed forests. The top layer, outer lining, leg cuffs and packaging are all made from 100% sustainable materials. Produced in a carbon neutral factory, Kit & Kin diapers are the natural choice.
Every product gives back through the Kit & Kin Foundation. Thanks to your support we help protect acres of threatened rainforest around the world and support women and children living in these areas with educational scholarships, family planning clinics and healthcare. Together, we can make a real difference.
Why should I choose Kit & Kin babywear?
Our babywear range is made from 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton that is super soft and sustainably sourced.
Our children are exposed to an increasing number of pollutants in many aspects of normal everyday life so choosing organic fibres is another step towards living a natural healthier lifestyle. Baby’s skin is thinner and more fragile than adults. It is also less resistant to bacteria and harmful substances in the environment, especially when irritated, so it is therefore only natural that we want to dress them in fabrics that have not been treated with any chemicals or pesticides.
The farming of organic cotton does not use pesticides and other harmful toxins associated with the production of conventional cotton. Safer methods include crop rotation, physical removal of weeds instead of using herbicides, hand hoeing and using beneficial insects to counteract the bad. As a result, workers have better conditions, water quality is not compromised by run-off, and strong healthy soil is built. The end product is an organic cotton fabric and yarn that is toxic-free.
Not only does our babywear feel and look good, it also does good too. As part of our Giving Back programme with the World Land Trust (WLT), every item of the range purchased helps fund sustainable community development projects in Guatemala, providing educational scholarships, healthcare and family planning clinics for local young women. Through your support, together we can continue to empower women all over the world.
What are Kit & Kin diapers made from?
We have replaced much of the plastic you find in standard diapers with sustainable materials that are not only kinder to your baby’s skin but also help to protect the future resources of our world.
The diaper’s absorbent core is made using bio-based gels (based on mass balance) and natural cellulose (wood pulp) that is sourced from an FSC® certified forest. This ensures that the wood pulp we use is from a sustainably managed forest. The fluff is bleached using oxygen, not chlorine.
The top layer (which comes into contact with your baby’s delicate skin) is plant-based and super gentle, while the outer lining, leg cuffs and packaging are all made from 100% sustainable materials.
Our diapers are now produced in a carbon neutral factory, so they’re even greener than ever.
Traditional diapers are primarily made from plastics, a non-renewable resource derived from oil. These plastic diapers will take anything up to 500 years to biodegrade. Furthermore, let’s not forget oil is a finite resource that will eventually run out, which is why we use sustainable, plant-based materials that are much kinder on our planet.

Why should I use Kit & Kin skincare?
Newborn skin is delicate, and so is a baby’s immune system. Skin is the body’s largest organ and absorbs up to 60% of ingredients in the products we apply.
Your baby deserves the best. You deserve the best. Kit & Kin only use pure oils, gentle herbs and the cleanest ingredients. Our beautiful, gentle yet effective skincare range will help protect your little ones’ soft delicate skin and ensure your family steers clear of any harmful toxins.
Our skincare is hypoallergenic and has been clinically tested and approved by dermatologists and certified natural by the Soil Association and COSMOS, Europe’s largest regulatory body for cosmetics.
Products in our skincare range are free-from parabens, silicones, dyes, synthetic fragrances, formaldehyde carriers, gluten, PEGs or most common allergens.
By choosing Kit & Kin, you are safeguarding and protecting your family from toxic ingredients such as parabens and SLS; these synthetic ingredients are commonly found in other brand’s bath and body products available on shelves. These ingredients are recognised to cause irritation to skin and may even have damaging effects longer term.
What is "our commitment to you" about?
We are committed to ensuring we only offer the safest, most effective and nourishing products that will care for you and your family. Our products will never include any harsh chemicals or irritants such as: chlorine processing, latex, lotions, artificial fragrances, most common allergens, phthalates, optical brighteners, or organotins (MBT, DBT, TBT)
Reusable diapers & accessories
Are reusable diapers easy to use?
Yes! We know lots of parents expect reusables to be complicated and hard work but we’ve designed ours to be simple. They’re super absorbent to reduce the chance of any leaks, and once used you can wash them in the machine. They are made from durable fabrics to easily wash and dry, and depending on your little one’s needs you may choose to also use boosters and liners alongside the diaper.
“I was initially a little nervous to try and imagined it would be a little complicated, fussy and messy but it was the complete opposite....we love it! It’s so soft to the touch, beautiful to look at and incredibly absorbent.”
What type of reusable is the Kit & Kin cloth diaper?
Ours is an all-in-one diaper, with a double gusset. The inner layer of our Tencel and hemp core pulls out for easy washing and drying. With an adjustable Velcro waist and poppers, you can adapt the size of the diaper to fit your baby as it grows.
Can I use them from birth?
Absolutely, our diaper is one size fits all and is suitable for newborns (8lbs/4kg+) all the way up to toddlers. This is thanks to the handy poppers and adjustable velcro waist which means the diaper will always fit your baby’s shape as they grow.
How do I fit the diaper?
The diaper should sit snug around your baby’s torso and thighs. Double check it’s not too tight by placing two fingers inside the waistline. When putting the diaper on, place the back part nice and low so that you can pull the front up as much as possible before fastening the hook and loop tabs. This is important because you want as much of the absorbent lining to play with at the front as possible.
For smaller babies, the front should rise high enough to cover the belly button. Please use the poppers to adjust for the best fit. Also make sure the leg cuffs are tucked into your baby’s leg creases.
How do I use your boosters?
Boosters are a great way of adding extra absorbency to the diaper if required during the day or at night. Place them inside the diaper on top of the absorbent lining. Our boosters are super slim, yet super thirsty, so you can even fold them or add two at a time. If your baby is a boy, use them to add extra absorbency to the front of the diaper, for girls add them closer to the middle.
During the night, using boosters is particularly important as they offer the absorbency required for this prolonged period of use. If your baby drinks a lot before bedtime, we even recommend using two boosters.
How should I wash the diapers? Do they need to be washed before use?
Yes, the diaper should be washed before use to increase its absorbency and of course between uses. We recommend machine washing them on a long cycle at 40 degrees with a non-bio powder, as this will protect the longevity of the diaper as well as our planet. However, you can wash them at 60 degrees if you wish, for example if your baby has been ill. Fabric softener or conditioner can reduce the absorbency of the diaper so do not use these.
Make sure the drum is no more than three quarters full when loading. Always pull out the inner towel to ensure the best possible wash, and stick the hook and loop tabs together before placing in the machine – this will prevent snagging on the diaper.
How should I dry the diapers?
We recommend air drying our diapers, ideally with the inner fabric exposed to direct sunlight as the sun will naturally bleach the material and speed up drying time. When hanging the diapers to dry, make sure the inner towel is fully pulled out to allow them to dry as quickly as possible.
Always keep garments separated to allow air circulation and faster drying. Do not dry directly on a radiator. If you want to tumble dry your diapers, ensure this is done on a cool setting only - however do bear in mind that tumble drying may shorten the lifespan of the nappy.
How many diapers do I need?
This depends on whether you will be using reusables on their own or as part of a mix with disposables, so it very much varies from person to person. You will also need to work out how often you will be washing the diapers as this will affect how many you need - most people tend to do a wash every couple of days.
As a guide we’d recommend around 15-20 diapers if you are using them full time, or 8-10 if you’re using them part time. We created three super cute animal designs so you can rotate prints depending on your preference.
How often should I change the diaper?
This will vary depending on your baby and how old they are, but generally we would recommend changing the diaper every 2-4 hours during the day.
Should I use a booster or a liner as well?
The diaper alone is super absorbent, but you may wish to also use boosters and liners to help make diaper changing even easier. If you're looking for extra absorbency, then our plant-based boosters will add an additional layer and allow you to change less frequently. Simply place the booster on the lining of the diaper, and when it comes to washing you should follow the same instructions as the diapers.
Our biodegradable liners are designed to contain solids and prevent heavy soiling of your diapers. Again, these should be placed on the inner lining of the diaper, but unlike our boosters, they are disposable - when the diaper is ready to be changed, lift the liner up carefully and throw away. Do not flush the liner down the toilet.
If you're new to cloth and unsure if you need the accessories, we'd recommend giving them a go, as they should help you find the process that works best for you and your little one.
What should I do when out and about?
When changing your baby’s diaper on the go, simply store your used diapers in our handy diaper wallet, which helps make diaper changing quick and simple. The looped strap allows you to fasten it to a buggy handle so it’s always easy to reach, and it’s fully machine washable - once you’re back home you can place it straight in the machine.
I am concerned about leaks. Can you help?
This is something a lot of parents worry about when they consider using reusables. The truth is that they can keep baby just as dry as disposable diapers.
Here’s what you need to know:
1) Wash the diaper prior to use
We recommend washing your diaper 1-3 times prior to use. This will increase its absorbency.
2) Ensure it’s fitted correctly
The diaper should sit snug around your baby’s torso and thighs. Double check it’s not too tight by placing two fingers inside the waistline. When putting the diaper on, place the back part nice and low so that you can pull the front up as much as possible before fastening the hook and loop tabs. This is important because you want as much of the absorbent lining to play with at the front as possible. For smaller babies, the front should rise high enough to cover the belly button. Please use the poppers to adjust for the best fit. Also make sure the leg cuffs are tucked into your baby’s leg creases.
3) Change frequently
During the day, change the diaper every 2-4 hours. You will soon get to know your little one and figure out how often they need to be changed.
4) Use boosters to increase and customise your diaper’s absorbency
Place them inside the diaper on top of the absorbent lining. Our boosters are super slim, yet super thirsty, so you can even fold them or add two at a time. If your baby is a boy, use them to add extra absorbency to the front of the diaper, for girls add them closer to the middle. During the night, using boosters is particularly important as they offer added absorbency for this prolonged period of use. If your baby drinks a lot before bedtime, we even recommend using two boosters.
